Digital Distractions during the Pandemic

It’s been 7 months since my last blog post!

Like many people, I’ve been mostly at home since March, and have been fortunate to have been able to work from home. I have spent more time than usual using video games as a source of entertainment, escape, and distraction. There are three that really have stood out:

  • Supernatural – This is a VR exercise app, with a new workout every day from one of three trainers. This has made exercise fun during lockdown without even going outside.
  • Half-Life: Alyx – This has been widely acknowledged as the best VR game to date, and I completely agree. This provided hours of fun being immersed in the world of Half-Life. Both the VR and the gameplay (VR or not) was impeccable.
  • Control – The one on the list that is not VR, I have become addicted to this game. Made by Remedy Games, who made Max Payne 2 (a favorite of mine 15 years ago), the gameplay and story keeps bringing me back, even for most of the difficult boss fights although there are still a few that I haven’t completed.

I highly recommend all of these, with the caveat that each requires specific computer and/or VR hardware.

I intend to write my next blog post with less than 7 month delay next time, and will talk about a project I began 40 years ago. 🙂
